Sugar Hill Sugar Hill is a famous neighborhood in Harlem in the northern part of Hamilton Heights, which is located in New York City on Manhattan Island. The name Sugar Hill was taken on in the 1920’s as a new moniker as it was a place that wealthy African Americans decided to settle for the “sweet life”. Sugar Hill is described as an historic district by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2000 and it is also a National Registered Historic Place. The rap group, Sugarhill Gang, one of the first of its genre, made the area famous on the music scene. They were popular for their major hit Rapper’s Delight. Today Sugar Hill which extends from Edgecomb Avenue to Amsterdam Avenue, and from 145th Street to 155th Street, continues to be a popular residential area.
